Captain Pine’s Emoji Puzzle Level 1

Game 1: How does Captain Pine feel?

For 1 adult, and any number of children aged 4+ as long as each child has 1 set of puzzle on hand. Level 1 is intended for warming up, or for kids with difficulty understanding basic emotions.

Game Rules

This game is to understand the most basic 4 emotions (joy, sadness, fear and anger) in association with different scenarios.

Card Composition

Every child has a set of 4 cards of eyes (upper face) and 4 cards of mouths (lower face) in solid purple, blue, green and red background labeled 'Level 1'. The adult has the scenario cards.

Instructions

  1. The adult selects and shows 1 scenario card to the children and briefly describe what it is in the picture, and then ask all children how Captain Pine feels.
  2. Every child player pairs 1 card of eyes and 1 card of mouth to assemble the face showing the most suitable emotion.
  3. The adult discusses the cause of the emotion with the children. If it is a group play session, it is encouraged that each child has a chance to speak.
  4. Repeat with other scenario cards. Below are the four basic emotions.

Takeaways

While we believe that there is no rights or wrongs in feelings and everyone can feel different when reacting to the same situation, we understand that some young children need clear and simple direction as their first steps in emotional learning. Level 1 of this emoji puzzle is designed to serve this purpose and pave the way to more complex understanding in Level 2.
